Welcome to the Slough Phil 2017/18 season
For a listing of the concerts see the Concert Diary page.
School Hall, Eton was filled with the glorious operatic sounds of Puccini on Saturday 16th December before the second half brought us into the Christmas spirit with Vaughan Williams' Fantasia and Hely Hutchinson's symphony both based on Christmas Carols. In addition to audience and chorus carol singing we were treated to bass soloist, Jonathan Wood's expressive reading of Maya Angelou's Amazing Peace: a Christmas poem.
In March we perform Rachmaninov’s popular 2nd Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s great Fifth Symphony with Handel’s Messiah following in April – three all time audience favourites.
Thanks to generous support for our Soloists’ Fund we are joined this season by some superb guest artists including pianist Alexander Ullman saxophonist Simon Allen and high quality vocal soloists.
Following the four Saturday evening concerts, we end the season in lighter mood with a Sunday afternoon popular Orchestral Concert and an English Sunday Afternoon Tea Concert with the chorus.
‘It was a huge pleasure playing with you all…‘ Sam Armstong, pianist, March 2017
‘...you gave us a wonderful evening's entertainment, and I look forward to coming to the next concert...’ Audience letter received, November 2017
Director of Music: David Wilson
Chorus Director: Sheila Cornall
Orchestral Leader: Marilyn Vanryne

Slough Philharmonic has been rooted in the community for more than 70 years from its visionary war-time birth to its current dynamic involvement with the town’s schools and music-lovers throughout the area. The chorus and orchestra were founded in 1941 by SEGRO (then Slough Estates Ltd) which despite the outbreak of World War Two in 1939 pursued a far-sighted policy enabling people to enjoy artistic, cultural and sporting activities locally. Slough Phil is still generously supported by SEGRO plc. Its twin structure of orchestra and chorus is its strength, allowing members to perform a hugely-varied repertoire (see our concerts page) from the great symphonies, showpiece concertos and choral works to pop classics, musicals, jazz and opera.
